Winter Blues

Once again the winter season is near. Cool temperatures, shorter and darker days, and for some even snow. Along with the winter season often comes cold and flu season but also one other ailment that often goes undiagnosed or even unnoticed; the winter blues or seasonal affective disorder (SADS). Women are more likely to suffer from this depression-like disorder than men and it can be stress levels that contribute to this. Whether it is everyday stresses or the holiday season stresses it is important to remember that it is not the event itself that is stressful but ‘how’ we handle the event.

Energy is a large part of stress in that when we are stressed, energy levels often diminish. I have found that in order for energy to be increase, our vibration must also increase. Vibration are the frequencies that our bodies live on and so when we are stressed we often feel maxed or have too much going on which decreases our vibrations but in fact we want to increase our vibration to increase energy and eliminate stress. Slowing down and doing things like Meditation is one way to gain peace and increase vibration levels as well as Deep Breathing Practice, which will also relax and calm the mind. I have found that from using Full Spectrum Lighting in my private practice the effects are similar to natural sunlight and can relieve a number of disorders including SADS, migraines and premenstrual syndrome. The full wavelength spectrum that comes from sunlight triggers impulses that regulate most bodily functions.

Another easy way to increase positive vibration in our bodies is the use of pure essential oils –Aromatherapy. Essential oils have high vibrations and just smelling or applying them to the body increases our vibration. I find the citrus oils are especially effective in lifting your mood. There are many oils to choose from all highly beneficial for different issues you may have. You may even want to experiment with some that remind you of summer.

The things I have mentioned above all work extremely well to help avoid the winter blues but these are all just tools, and sometimes tools are not enough. It is our beliefs and thoughts that determines our actions and our reality. If you think depressing thoughts your vibration become lower, you will end up being depressed and more negative things will come into your life. As the saying goes ‘you are what you say’ which also works with you are what you think. It is amazing because we often don’t even realize when we are thinking theses thoughts. It is not until we really stop and listen before we become aware of this habit.

By telling yourself what you want to have in your life you can have it and live it!
Here are some affirmations for the winter blues.

“I love knowing that I am in the process of having more energy and being free of depression”
“It excites me to think spring is coming”
“I love being healthy and happy”

These can be used to replace any unsupportive thoughts that you may have when you catch yourself thinking or saying them. There are many times when we can add supportive affirmations into our daily lives to attract things like more energy, greater health, money or what ever you wish to have more of in life. Be aware, play with it and have fun!
