Writing a New Page
Author: Della Menechella

Each new year is laden with possibilities like the pages of a new journal. At the beginning of a new year, many of us make resolutions. However, we often make the resolutions quickly with very little thought as to what is or isn’t working in our lives. As a result, the resolutions usually fail, sometimes even before the holiday decorations are taken down and packed away.

USING HUMOR TO SOLVE PEOPLE PROBLEMS
Author: Mike Moore

People involved in interpersonal conflict in both business and industry are often too close to the problems to be of any great help in solving them. They feel insecure, uncomfortable and threatened when it comes to expressing their feelings and offering possible solutions. “What will the boss think if I rock the boat?” How will I be able to work with these people if I appear to be criticizing them?” “Will they think I’m a trouble maker?” “How can I hurt peoples’ feelings?” The predictable answers to these questions will ensure that things will remain the same. Nothing will change. Nobody wants to step outside their comfort zone and disturb the status quo no matter how much the status quo needs to be challenged. So stress continues to increase and morale continues to decline.

Traits of Effective, Respected, and Liked Leader
Author: Virginia Reeves

A truly energizing leader acts as a catalyst - the one who ultimately gets people going. They move others out of their comfort zone by believing in them and providing the support those people need to take risks. This person can raise the passion and enthusiasm of others so they want to take action. Change is looked upon as something to embrace, not fear. Challenges are met with open minds and more optimism versus pessimism. One of the principles in the Dale Carnegie Training program is for a leader to become a consensus builder. A major point is to arouse interest in your ideas by asking for advice and opinions. Make the phraise "What if..." a standard working tool. When people have had a say in setting a goal or putting together a proposal, they are more willing to work hard to make it work right.

The Torn Manager
Author: Terri Levine

Managers often find themselves playing the role of middle-man because that is what they are… in the middle. The go-between for higher management and the workers. You can see how this can present a conflict of interests. How do you represent the views of the upper echelon and protect the interests of those who work under you at the same time? It can be done, of course, and is done every day. It’s part and parcel of being a manager and goes with the territory along with a large dose of stress.

Progress Reviews: Your Key To Effective Coaching
Author: Susan Cullen

One of the most effective ways to help your staff succeed is to provide regular, consistent coaching throughout the year. A Progress Review is a specific kind of coaching discussion, tied to the employee’s Annual Objectives and Standards. It is an informal discussion in which the manager coaches the direct report to meet any unmet goals that are below target, and praises him or her for goals that are being met. Conducting progress reviews are a very important role for being an effective leader or coach. It is suggested that each of your direct reports receive a progress review discussion from you at least 2-3 times per year.

Author: Brent Filson

"He Hate Me" was the nickname of Rod Smart, a leading rusher in 2002 for the Las Vegas Outlaws of the now defunct XFL pro football league. Looking for an edge, the XFL allowed players to put nicknames on their uniforms. "I was always saying, 'he hate me,' all through camp in Vegas," Smart said. "If I didn't get the ball, I'd talk to the other running backs and say, 'he hate me, man; this coach hate me.' I was always saying that." Smart put He Hate Me on the back of his number 32 jersey, and now the name lives in lore even though XFL has been out of business for years.

Having Trouble Motivating Others? Try WIIFM
Author: Della Menechella

Recently my fourteen-year old son Matt dressed up as Santa Claus and attended a Christmas caroling event for one of my professional organizations. Was my son excited about the idea of spending one of his evenings singing to seniors instead of being with his friends? Not really. Then how did I get Matt to agree so readily to come to the event and play Santa? It was easy; I told him that after we finish caroling we all go back to our host facility and enjoy delicious food. That was enough for Matt. He heard the word food and was ready and willing to go. I could have tried to motivate Matt by telling him what a wonderful thing he would be doing by making so many people happy. While Matt is a caring teenager, that argument would not have been enough to get him to go. However, tell a teenage boy that there will be good food where you are going and you can get him to do almost anything. I motivated my son to participate in this activity by considering his WIIFM or What’s In It For Me

Recently my friend Michelle was concerned about a professional conference she was planning to attend with her husband, a veterinarian. She has no background in veterinary science, so she did not think she would be able to effectively communicate with the people at the conference. I asked her why she thought she had to use technical jargon when she spoke to the other conference attendees. She responded that she wanted them to think well of her. Michelle is a warm, caring individual who is genuinely interested in others. I assured her that she could effectively relate to the people she met by asking them questions about themselves and their businesses instead of trying to impress them with her knowledge of veterinary science.

"Do You Mind If Someone Screams At You?"
Author: Lora J Adrianse

A headhunter was on the other end of the phone. He was looking for an assistant to a CEO/Owner for a small, but very successful business. Essentially, he wanted someone at his disposal night and day. That didn't seem like a huge deal. And then the next question came..."Do you mind if someone screams at you?" As soon as I could get past the sirens going off in my head, and visions of Dilbert comic strips, I replied, "Yes, that's not acceptable". The headhunter continued, "Well, he probably wouldn't call you names, but he's a pretty hard driving guy and he raises his voice a lot".
