The secret that the self-help gurus, psychologists, and counselors haven't told us ... because they don't know it!
Author: Tom and Linda Carlson

All of us have had moments where we believed that we had more potential than we were using. We just knew that we could get a better job, make our marriage better and improve family relationships. Surely we could learn more - faster!

There are thousands of books and tapes urging us to get more out of life and become more powerful! A common phrase is: "Einstein used only about 10% of his mental capacity. How much are you using?" Discovering where your natural mental power lies is the first step to unlocking your potential. It reveals a secret about yourself that has been buried under years of learning to do things someone else's way.

The beginning point for unraveling this secret of personal power is to know the truth of the statement: "As a man (person) thinketh, so is he (she)." What we think is what we communicate to ourselves and others.

How we think is key to unlocking your personal power. The first clue to the secret started over a lunch many years ago. We had just given a workshop and had tried to give some directions to the participants. Every member of the group seemed to follow our directions differently. We were communication experts for goodness sake! We had been so careful to be clear and precise and yet...This happens to everyone all the time.

Workers experience it on the job, parents feel this frustration with their children, wives and husbands feel stress, and friends feel it when they are "grossly misunderstood " Traditionally, this has been labeled as bad communications and thousand of recommendations have been given to correct the situation. But, with all of the help offered, a basic step has been left out.

Everyone has assumed that the solution to the problem is in the effort of the sender and the receiver. This means that you need to organize your thoughts better, or learn to listen more carefully. Then it dawned on us. The real question is, "Is there a difference in the way you and I treat information in our heads?" We decided to dedicate a few months to this question, and now have spent over two decades in working with this amazing new discovery about human thinking.

And now the secret! Simply put, we just do not all think the same way. We all claim to know this, yet we act as if everyone is capable of thinking the same way. When we have misunderstandings, we usually believe it is the other persons fault or they could understand if they really wanted to.

Our 20 years of research has demonstrated that we were all born to look at the world through brains that use certain patterns or styles to manage information, whether it is coming into our minds, or we are organizing our thoughts to communicate with others. Each of us has one of five possible styles that we were born to use. We call this a "Natural Style." Each of these styles has it's special strengths.

As babies we found this to be our power style for we had virtually no stress while we learned--and we learned fast! For instance, how long did it take you to walk or talk? Your Natural Style is the source of your talents, your personal power and your potential.

Unfortunately, as we grow up, 92% of us choose to assume characteristics of another style to line up our thoughts, rather than the one we were born with. About 50% of those who take on a "Learned Style" do it quite drastically. So why do people change their style? Why would you change yours?

If your parents had a different style from yours--or a teacher, spouse, or friend--you might come to believe that their style worked better than yours. Types of education (e.g. accounting, philosophy, art, math...) can influence style. Who you marry, or what job you have, can effect a style change.

You put on the Learned Style when you think you are trying to do your best. The simple fact is that using a Learned Style may get you by - but, it will never stretch you to the level of personal potential you are capable of reaching.

Are you beginning to understand how important this really is? It shapes your whole world! How you react to information can affect who you choose to marry. It controls what career you select. It dictates how you raise your children. This means that unless you live in a cave and never have to deal with the world, the discovery of your Natural Style is possibly one of the most life shaping, significant breakthroughs, you will ever encounter.

Your Natural Style moves fast to get you out of harm's way. It comes to your rescue when you are stressed or it shows up when you are relaxed and feeling safe. You Natural Style is the source of your personal power! So when you need to do your best work and look your best, doesn't it make sense to know and use your personal power?
