The Joy and Stress of Relationships
Author: Jackie Woods

In order to experience the greatest amount of joy possible in a relationship, you must go through the inevitable stress that is generated by a growing relationship. A quiet truce can exist with moments of pleasure in a non-growing relationship, but that is not the same as the joy that is experienced when two people reach new heights of selfhood.

There are certain qualities of relationship that must continue to change and grow or they will get stale and boring. For instance, intimacy is never something you achieve. It is a way of sharing who you are on a deep level. Unless you are a very shallow person, the depths of who you are will never be totally explored in a lifetime. However, delving deeper and deeper can cause stress. The flip side of that coin is the joy of discovery when each new piece is uncovered.

Compatibility is another quality that requires continual updating. Being compatible in 2004 certainly does not guarantee compatibility in 2005. To try and hold on to the known parts of a relationship, not only keeps it from growing, but will also hold the partners in place. Even if they don't get dissatisfied with the relationship, they will feel unfulfilled with life in general - or visa versa.

While some relationship qualities need constant revision, others need a lot of practice. Communication and sharing are two of those qualities which often need practice. Couples with the best intent in the world to share the totality of their lives with their partners, will fall short unless they keep sharpening their communication skills. While on the other hand, couples with great communication skills may not be bringing them to the sharing table. Sharing and communication make a great team, but they both require constancy.

I would like to offer one final bit of advice for your growing relationship. Voice your needs to your partner, but claim responsibility for them yourself. A partnership is not made strong by taking care of each others needs so much as being sensitive to what those needs are.
