Love

People have a hard time describing love because it is an umbrella heart quality. Love can encompass many qualities depending on the person's definition of love. For example, one person might consider kindness and patience to be part of love while another might believe love includes such qualities as protection and support.

If our definition of love gets bigger than what we can actually offer, then we begin to feel bad about ourselves. If our definition is different than that of the people from whom we wish to receive love, we will feel unloved. So the trick is to recognize what is really present in ourselves and in others and appreciate it. Of course, that means we may need to search in a variety of places for all the pieces of love that we need to have available to us.

The irony of all this is that you may offer different qualities of love than those you wish to receive. I know a man who loves by nurturing people. Yet he never allows himself to receive nurturing. I don't know if he feels it would subtract from the value of his gift to credit others with his type of love, or if he just has a false notion about males receiving nurturing. Even though this man is not a lone exception, it is more common for us to want to receive the same heart qualities we give under the love umbrella, than it is to want different ones.

It is my belief that the key to loving relationships is found by accepting that love comes in many qualities and forms. Once that discovery is made, you can not only expand your capacity to receive love, but you can also expand the places you receive love from. This takes the pressure off of those people around you and makes life much more enjoyable. The need to demand love or to get emotionally bent out-of-shape when their love doesn't match your definition, goes away. Life becomes much more fulfilling and enjoyable. So why not let love grow?
