CONSIDERING THE MEANING OF SUCCESS
Author: COACH ROSA, MA
In the process of coaching you will automatically develop your emotional intelligence, which is a lot different than IQ! This is something that will stay with you for a lifetime and make the rest of your life easier. This means you will have what they call people skills, a necessary ingredient for success! In the process of that development, here are some recommendations to help you develop your emotional IQ:1-Know yourself well.
Coaching will help you in this process. You can also take some assessments in coaching which will help you understand yourself.2-Identify the cause of your feelings so that you become aware of split second preconscious thoughts and their possible distortions. When you are confused about what you are feeling ask your coach to help you identify the confusion.3-Learn to differentiate between emotion and the subsequent need to take action.
This refers to the need to promote action in response to avoidance, withdrawal, and sadness. This means you will act ! before you think. This also refers to the need to inhibit action in response to anger and hostility.4-Acquire the skills of “learned optimism”what is your personal explanatory style? Increase your optimism when appropriate.5-Try to turn your mistakes into energy.6-Increase positive feedback to yourself and to others.7-Reframe negatives, find something good or something learned.
You must understand that emotional intelligence describes abilities distinct from and complementary to academic intelligence, the purely cognitive capabilities measured by IQ. Knowing ones inner world and social adeptness is the aspect I am referring to in this document particularly related to the coaching process. The idea is being able to monitor and regulate your own and others feelings. This monitor is used to guide your thoughts and actions consequently improving the quality of your life. The term emotional intelligence encompasses many abilities and competencies such that my training as a strateg! ist is of great assistance for clients who wish to develop ! this skill.
Those individuals who are able to handle their emotions, not just the mere expression or regulation of them, but who are also able to generate the kinds of emotions that are productive and efficient, are indeed emotionally intelligent. It is important to understand that emotions are caused by the interpretation of events rather than the events in and of themselves. It is your interpretation of events that we discuss in coaching. Sometimes your interpretations are not totally conscious, you may not understand your own interpretations. This is where a coach can help you develop and reach that understanding. You might be surprised as to how you can alter your own interpretations to enhance your performance. The less you experience automatic emotional reactions the better you will feel.
This puts you in the drivers seat and eliminates the nagging doubt you may have when you ask yourself why you did something. When you become highly developed emotionally you will ha! ve a better understanding of those preconscious thoughts, which can lead you to act without thinking. Coaching is your assistant to directly influence feelings, thoughts, and behaviors without the long-term therapy so many people see as a cure all. Remember, your IQ alone does not determine success in life.
