Dragons, Frogs and Poison Apples in Your Journal.
Author: Becka Mordini
Battling dragons at work? Kissed too many frogs? A bit of poison apple stuck in your throat? I am now giving you permission to live in a fantasy world. As a matter of fact, I highly recommend it if you are to get the most out of real life. The way to do this is through Mythic Journaling, writing about your life as if it were a myth of fairytale.
Writing in your journal is a great way to process your thoughts, feelings and events of the day. But some situations don’t seem to budge, despite pages and pages of honest outpourings. Often times we will find ourselves writing about the same issues, coming to the same conclusions, page after page, year after year.
Myths and fairytales are powerful vehicles for taking us out of our personality or ego-based mind. These tales are based on archetypes that strike deep cords of familiarity within most of humanity. Not only have we heard these stories all our lives, and down through the ages, but they are familiar on another level. Something within us recognizes the conflicts and resolutions of these tales.
Using myths and fairytales in your journal writing will allow the power of the archetype to overshadow your own ego. You will be able to write about your situation free from your own bias and programming.
The results for Mythic Journaling workshop participants have ranged from fun to powerful. Everyone enjoys the fun and playful nature of the experience. Most people find that hidden assumptions, feelings and patterns emerge.
One woman wrote about her life as Cinderella. She discovered that she had always felt left out from her sisters and left with all the responsibility. In her real life she loved her sisters, was responsible and had nothing to complain about. But the hidden emotions had kept her from feeling really close for years. In the Cinderella story, the truth was allowed to surface. This release alone was enough to allow the feelings to dissipate and open the doors for a closer relationship.
Other participants have found insight on divorce, relationships, career choices, entrepreneurial struggles and relationships with their parents. I encourage you to try this technique in your own journal writing. If you have the chance please join us for a fun evening at a Mythic Journaling workshop. We set the stage and guide you through your own personal exploration of the mythic tales of your life.
