Consistency
Author: Kathy Gates, Professional Life Coach

Since this is the time of year for Resolutions, I would like to share with you the ONE resolution that I have made for 2002. Perhaps it will impact your life, in the same way that it has already impacted mine.

My Resolution is: "I will be consistent." Now, before you protest, I know this goes against goal-setting ideals of being specific, measurable, and realistic (achievable). So...what was I THINKING?

Let me tell you a story of how I came to this resolution. My husband and I have a rather large yard. We enjoy it, but with a large yard also comes the large maintenance work of mowing, weeding, planting, trimming…blah blah blah.

Over a period of 9 years, we struggled to find the time to manage a yard so large. It seemed like it always needed attention. Instead of an enjoyment, it became a source of aggravation to both of us, and the "why don't you do it?" discussions became far too frequent.

Late last summer, we decided to try hiring a yard maintenance man. Our thoughts were that perhaps he could "catch us up", and then we could take over again. The yard man came once a week for about 2 hours. Within weeks, our yard looked better than it ever had. It stayed manicured and maintained…with only 2 hours/week of work. When we had tried to do it, it seemed like we had spent many more hours struggling with it than that! I began to wonder what we had been doing "wrong".

It wasn't that he was a professional and had the right tools and training. (Although having the right tools and training is a major league BONUS!) Have you guessed it? That's right! Consistency. While we WORRIED about it a lot, and thought about it a lot, and cussed-and-discussed it a lot, we didn't actually DO anything with any kind of consistency. It was "hit and miss" as my mother used to say. The yardman, however, spent 2 hours every Tuesday only on my yard - not thinking about it, not worrying about it, not letting other things get in the way of his job….doing it. He devoted his time and attention to MY yard and nothing else for those 2 hours every Tuesday morning.

Consistency. It was certainly evident in my yard. I began to wonder how applying consistency in my life might pay off.

What if I CONSISTENTLY walked every morning at 9:00 for 30 minutes? How about if I CONSISTENTLY put 0 into a 401k plan each month? What if I CONSISTENTLY threw out the clutter that the mail man brings every day? How about if I CONSISTENTLY found 15 minutes of quiet time for myself each evening before bed? What if I CONSISTENTLY watched my thoughts for negativity and challenged their accuracy?

Truthfully, I was a little early this year, and I actually made his resolution in the Fall and began to practice it. The results have been amazing! I no longer think about food as "good or bad". I don't label myself as a quitter or a lazy slob if I consider not exercising one day. I don't keep a lot of "shoulds, oughtas, havetos, and if-onlys" wandering around in my overloaded brain. All that clutter is gone. I simply remind myself to make the same choice each day...consistently.

Are you thinking of ways that CONSISTENCY could pay off in your life too? I hope so!

Having the right tools and learning the skills necessary to tackle a job are also vitally important. If you need help with tools or skills, be sure to ASK for help. Learn what you need to know, then apply your knowledge CONSISTENTLY.

It will change your life.

REAL-LIFE Challenge: Want to join me in this resolution? Write down in big letters - "I will be consistent" - and post it somewhere (everywhere?) that you can see it often. Choose ONE (only ONE to start!) activity that you would like to be consistent at over the coming year…exercising, saving money, reducing clutter, etc. Then set it up, schedule it, protect it, and watch your results GROW!
