Make SMART Goals SMARTER
Author: Curtis G. Schmitt

One common technique in the field of goal-setting is creating S.M.A.R.T. goals, goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-oriented, and Time-bound.

Clarifying your goals in this way is quite powerful, but the S.M.A.R.T. goal technique by itself does not address the daily pursuit of your goals. That is, you know exactly what, why, and when, but how do you ensure you’ll do what’s necessary to achieve it?

Simple. Create an action plan that is:

End-minded
Ritualistic

The End-Minded Perspective

Imagine yourself at the end of your life, reflecting back. How would you like to feel about your life? What purpose would you like your life to have served?

This end-of-life perspective helps you see what’s truly important and what’s not. Looking at your goals from this end-minded perspective shows you how they fit into the greater context of your life and your mission.

For example, using the S.M.A.R.T. technique, let’s say you clarified your goal as follows: To feel healthier, you will increase your consumption of fruit and vegetables to six servings a day by the end of the month. Improved health means a longer life, which means more quality time with your loved ones, something that’s very important to you if your life’s purpose includes, say, being a loving and supportive parent.

So the question becomes, not “Should I eat these cookies?” but “How many future days with my children (and grandchildren, and great-grandchildren) will I give up so I can continue to snack on cookies instead of carrots?”

Motivation in the moment can be fleeting. An end-minded perspective will empower you, and help you avoid temptation.

It’s quite possible you’ll find that your goal is not a part of your greater mission in life. Or worse, you’ll find your goal is in conflict with your mission. That is the time to re-evaluate your goal and decide if it’s important enough to pursue at all. There’s nothing wrong with letting go of a goal that’s wrong for you. In fact, it’s quite healthy.

Ritualistic Consistency

The quality of your life—your happiness, success, and health—is determined by your habits, that is, the thoughts you have and the actions you take on a regular basis.

Whenever you develop a habit, you’re harnessing the power of consistency whether you’re aware of it or not. Why not use it to your advantage? Small actions repeated again and again will erode mountains and turn rocks to sand. The power of consistency carved the Grand Canyon.

Advertisers know it: If they tell us something often enough, we’ll buy their products (everything from mouthwash to politicians). Investors know it: Investing five dollars a day, every day, will make you a millionaire. Athletes know it: You can’t cram for the Olympics.

Many of our habits are created unconsciously, but you can be proactive in the creation of your habits by performing daily rituals. When you create simple rituals and perform them every single day, they become powerful habits that require almost no motivation.

Continuing with the previous example, create a lunch ritual that consists of eating a raw vegetable salad. Add some sensory stimuli to the ritual to make it more enjoyable. One client of mine would lose himself in his favorite television show as he ate his big raw salad. Music is a great aid, too, especially for exercise-related goals.

Giving your ritual a consistent structure (same format, same time of day) will eliminate the daily obstacle of having to figure out what to do and when to do it.

Make your S.M.A.R.T. goals S.M.A.R.T.E.R. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-oriented, Time-bound, End-minded, Ritualistic) and watch your productivity explode!
