THE FIRST STEP TO SUCCESS

Success is an elusive thing. We all look for it all our lives, and it is intimately tied in to our self worth.

If there was one thing that is needed for success in life, what would it be? Faith, perseverance, ability to handle people, or many other things? This article focuses on an often neglected yet vital part of success, for you or anyone else.

Although all the above qualities are necessary to getting success and will be discussed later, you need one thing before all the others….

That one thing is your own complete personal definition of what success means to you.

Let’s consider what success could mean to you. Success could be measured in monetary terms… from earning twice your present salary, getting a new job, to being financially independent. If you get a new job earning twice your present salary, this may be enough for you to feel successful.

More driven people, however, may want more of everything… even though they may not always know what “more” means to them. These individuals may be chronically dissatisfied with their lives and feel a sense of failure, even though they may be doing well relative to other people.

Also, success has to do with quality as well as quantity…having good relationships with significant people and being happy.

You therefore need to define success in personal terms, in other words, what it means to you.

You need as far as possible to define it precisely. Let’s say you want to be financially independent. If your present job is say as a mechanic, you may think this dream is impossible. What you really mean is that you do not yet know how to become financially independent, given where you are. So when you think about it, you mean you need to get new skills or come up with a plan to become financially independent. Start by defining what you need to learn, then define the next step or steps as you go along.

Finally, you need to define success in a way that increases balance in your life. After all, success and happiness should go hand in hand.

This brings us to the last point. The key to defining success is to define it in as much detail as you can. In other words try to figure out the broad steps you need to accomplish your goals. Do not try to figure out exactly how to do everything. Your mind has a powerful subconscious,

which will figure things out if you focus on your goals intensely enough.

So the first step to success is to……DEFINE IT.
