Goals

Because the New Year and goal-setting time is approaching, we will take this opportunity to spend some with you time thinking about what it is that you want to achieve, and set some goals around that for the new year!

To either start (or to continue) achieving what you want out of your life, take this time to think about what it is that you really want! If you happen to have this written down already, great! Please find your list update it as necessary. If you happen to have this in your head, great! This will be a good time to write it down on paper. And if you haven’t spent much time thinking about this yet, great! This will be a good time for you to do it! Now, without further ado, we introduce…

WHAT I WANT

Below are three potentially very powerful exercises that you can use to find what it is that you really want. First, before starting either of the exercises, take a moment to relax, take a deep breath, and set the busyness and stress of your day aside – at least until you’re finished with the exercise(s)!

Exercise 1. (This exercise is one of our favorites; it has even been published in a featured magazine article. Even if you have done it before, it may be a good time to think through it again):

Exercise 2. Either as an addition to the exercise above, or if the above exercise doesn’t strike your fancy, please take a moment to try the following. Simply read the story and fill in the blanks:

I am 90 years old, and life has been good to me! I am taking a moment to reflect on my near-perfect life…

Looking back, the big accomplishments that I remember have been:

Laughing, I realize that wow – these really have been big accomplishments!! Smiling widely now, I think back to the few big steps I really needed to make in order to make each of those things happen. Those big steps are (either individual steps or in story format):

Great – good job! Now you can stop pretending you’re 90 years old!

Exercise 3. This exercise tends to work especially well for those people that have gone through the goal-setting process in the past. As with exercise 2, it can be done in addition to the previous exercises, or as a stand-alone exercise:

(Please continue writing if you have more than 10!)

Congratulations – now you have written your goals! In the first exercise, all of the A., B., and C.’s that you filled out are your goals. In the second exercise, the individual steps or stories which you wrote are your goals. And in the third exercise, your goals are simply listed out. Now take a moment to look at these list(s), and see if they look complete to you – at least for now. If not, please feel free to add more goals, in whatever format you would like.

Now you need to follow-through on these goals! That is where your own persistence, you friends and family, and a personal coach can help you out tremendously! On that note, Happy Holidays, and good luck!!
