The Inside - Out Approach
Author: Nicholas J. Gabriel

No lasting change will occur in our lives unless and until we first change ourselves from the inside - out. Nothing about our job, our friends, our marriage, our finances or any other aspect our lives will change. Nothing in our physical, mental, spiritual, social or emotional life will change unless and until we change ourselves first. Most of us can identify circumstances in our lives that we want to change. However, we remain unwilling to change ourselves from the inside-out. Lasting change can never occur unless and until we change ourselves. And all lasting change comes from the inside - out.

People often go to great length to change the external circumstances of their life. They change jobs, friends, spouses, the city they live in, the color of their hair, etc. Hoping some how that these external changes will result in a permanent change in their lives. Most of the time it doesn't work. Soon their lives are pretty much the same as they were prior to the change. When this happens they often blame others or life itself for their troubles. It never occurs to them that they have overlooked the most important change of all -- changing themselves from the inside -- out.

I'm sure you know someone who spends a considerable amount of time and energy blaming others. They continually look outside of themselves for the solutions to their problems. They blame their parents, or their teachers, or their neighbors and friends, or their spouse or boss for their current situation. Or, if they do find any fault with themselves it's always something external. They are too fat or too skinny, or too tall or too short, or too heavy or too light, or their hair isn't right, or something. It's everything and anything but their attitude, their choices and themselves.

These individuals keeping running, blaming and changing the external aspects of their lives. Some of their new choices provide temporary relief, satisfaction or happiness, so they come to believethat they have found the answer. Unfortunately, what usually happens is that they reach a point where they notice that something is missing. They just aren't as happy or satisfied as they use to be, or as they expected to be. So once again, they look at the external rather than internal aspects of their lives and the pattern repeats. For some people this pattern repeats for the rest of their lives.

These individuals never achieve or maintain lasting success and happiness. They join the ever-growing ranks of individuals who believe that life was just meant to be one big disappointment after another.

This is not to say that you should never change the external circumstances of your life. Sometimes changing these things are necessary. Just don't fall into the trap of fixing things that aren't broken. If your life is not turning out the way you planned, don't forget to look inside first.
