Life Lessons from your Dog
Author: Kate Nicoll, MSW

Idealized Love and Redemption

In heart and mind, our dogs are the perfect love. The return our love on most every approach;unless we are competing with a marrow bone or a neighborhood dog. We don't have to trick them into affection like some cat owners or parents of pre-teen children. They are all presence and represent the perfect love interest. They need food shelter, treats, a good run and some petting. Almost every attempt for affection, most dogs respond with a vengeance. In a dog's mind, there is almost nothing better than responding to your every need and wish.

This is the stuff of a great relationship, an idealized love with limited room for competion or comparison. Little asked for, but everything given. Can it be all good? Are our daily projections of our hopes sunken deep into those soulful brown eyes? do we use our dogs to serve our own emotional needs? This is a point where many companion animals and their human friends remain stuck in a relationship. Our dogs are all we need, when we need them. As suggestd by Konrad Lonrenz, dogs often transfer their mother love to us. Mother love is the perfected idealized love that all with for - the complete submissioin to someone to provide care and nurturance. It is a love not recreated and often longed for. This is perhaps why dogs make great therapists since their natural ability to nurture surpasses many human attempts.

I believe dogs are the perfect absorbers of all our projections, as they would often do anything to serve us. The idealized love of a companion animal can continue to serve many unmet needs of even the most needy of individuals. and humand can spend a good part of their dog's life viewing the dogs as their possesion, though also a friend.

For in no other relationship can we potentially mold and reward behavior that we are seeking, either for purpose or for our own needs. In the wonder of this idealized relationship, we can find redemption of even our most unlikeable traits. For the dog's wet kisses often heals our most profound inner worries and fears. Am I too needy? We lean to ask our companion searching for a kiss. Am I too demanding, we aks after the dog fetches our morning paper and slippers. Am I unloveable? For this, we ask for a long cuddle on our sofa before we can face the human world. The answer to many of these questions is found in the soulful expressions we project into our friends's furry face.
