Spellchecker options in Microsoft Word
Author: Barb Walker

Options in Spell Checker
Question: I like to use spell checker, but I have an unusual last name, and Word underlines it in red, indicating it’s misspelled. Can I turn off those red lines?
Answer: I hate it when spell checker adds “color” to my document by underlining words in red or green. (Green underlines indicate a grammatical error.)

The next time Microsoft Word or Works underlines a word in red, click the checkmark on your toolbar (that’s spell checker). You will see your misspelled word in the top white box under “Not in Dictionary.” The box below it is “Suggestions.” These are the words suggested to replace your misspelled word. If you have actually misspelled a word, click on the correctly spelled word in the Suggestions box and click the Change button on the right. If you know you have misspelled the word throughout the document, click Change All, below the Change button.

There are several other options. If the word is correctly spelled, but unfamiliar to Word or Works, you can click Ignore Once or Ignore All. If it’s a word you ALWAYS spell wrong, click AutoCorrect and the next time you misspell the word, Word will automatically correct it.

As for the unusual spelling of your last name, (this is also good for medical or technical terms that Word may not recognize) make sure the word is spelled correctly and simply click Add to Dictionary. It will never be marked as misspelled again.

Barb Walker, known in the Denver area as The Computer Lady, has written two computer tips manuals. Barb Walker has been "playing" with computers since the late 70s, both in the corporate world and in her own business. She now teaches beginning and intermediate computer users how to use their computers with less frustration in their home on their own computer. Readers of her computer tips columns in two senior citizen newspapers suggested she write a computer tips manual, which she did. It was quickly followed by a second manual and plans are on the "drawing board" for a third. Information about the manuals is available on Barb's website: www.TamingYourcomputer.com. She lives in the Denver, Colorado, area with her husband and enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband, her children and their families.
