What Do You Want to Get a Bite of?
Author: Rondell Demmings

On nice mornings after I give “The Boys” (my cats Gypsy and Bogey) their breakfast, I let them outside to lie in the sun and enjoy the outside for a couple of hours. Somewhere around the end of May beginning of June, I saw that my neighbor across the street had a Pit-bull puppy. Around the same time I am letting “The Boys” out, I would see my neighbor with two bowls and a blanket. He would place these items under the big tree in his front yard and then go back in the house and come out with the puppy. The puppy would have a leash that is a couple of feet long and at the end of the leash there is a 5 pound weight or dumbbell, I am not sure of the correct name for it. Anyway he would put the puppy under the tree to eat and to play under the shade of the tree. The weight was used to keep the puppy from being able to runaway.

Without failure, I would see Gypsy in a stalking position ease his way across the street when he feels no one is looking and stand at a distance that the puppy can’t reach him and taunt the poor puppy. I would call Gypsy and make him come in the house or on the mornings that I am busy, I would have either Tierra or Brandon, my daughter and son, check to see if Gypsy is taunting the puppy and if he was to make him come in the house.

This has been going on all summer. In the past couple of weeks I had not really looked at the puppy, I was only checking to make sure that Gypsy wasn’t across the street. Last week I finally looked at the puppy and he has really grown. He is now bigger than Gypsy. This particular morning when I called Gypsy he acted as if he didn’t hear me and he was sitting at his safe distance from the puppy and the puppy was going crazy that he couldn’t reach Gypsy. I walked outside and across the street to get Gypsy. When I got across the street I noticed that the puppy still had the 5-pound weight attached to the chain. The puppy has to weigh at least 20 pounds and is strong enough to drag the weight and get Gypsy.

When I came back in the house with Gypsy, I told my son Brandon, that Gypsy doesn’t know how lucky he is that the puppy hasn’t eaten him alive, because he is big enough that he can pull the weight and could have gotten Gypsy if he had only tried. Brandon said, “I wonder why the dog can’t figure out that he can drag the weight and get Gypsy?” I told Brandon that because the puppy is used to only being able to go a certain distance with out being pulled back, he only go the distance that he feels is safe and doesn’t cause him any discomfort. He hasn’t ventured out to see if he can go further in order to get Gypsy and eat his ass alive.

Just like the puppy, many of us don’t try to see how far we can really go. We stay in our safe zone so that we don’t experience any discomfort. What we fail to realize is that if we take just a step or two forward we may be able to obtain whatever it is that we truly would like to get, in this case, the puppy really wants to get Gypsy. We go through life as if we have some sort of weight anchoring us down keeping us from achieving whatever it is that we desire. We get so used to staying in our safe zone that we let good opportunities past us up, keeping us from doing whatever it is that we want to do.

Unless you take some sort of action to move towards what you want, you will never know if you can have it. In the past while in a coaching session, I had a client that was interested in going to school for designing jewelry. I wasn’t aware that there were schools for designing jewelry. The obvious question to her was, what is keeping you from going to school. I expected the answer would be that she didn’t have the money to attend school. Her answer was, what if I suck in designing jewelry. I told her that she will never know until she tries and if she does suck, isn’t that what the school is for is to teach you to be good at designing? Last I heard, she did enroll in a school and is enjoying the learning process.

Now that I am wiser of the situation with the dog, “The Boys” will not be outside if the dog is out unless my neighbor changes the way he has the dog tied up. Although Gypsy is very brave in taunting the dog, we all know the Law of Karma, what we do affects what happens to us, I feel it is my job to make sure that Gypsy is safe in the future.

Today I challenge you to take a small step forward in getting what you want. Whether it is research, asking questions or physically going to observe whatever it is you desire. You will see by taking this small step that you may be able to obtain whatever it is that you want or gain better knowledge so that you can start doing the work that is needed to get what you desire.
