To Do or to Be? The Truth About Purpose
Author: Teri Harris Saa

Let me begin with Everywoman’s story…That morning it happened again. I could feel it creeping up like a shadow, a foreboding, dense and dark. My doctor had said that it was simply stress, but there was nothing simple about it. With a sense of panic, I wanted to race forward into my responsibilities and run from them at the same time—kids, work, maintaining a household, social engagements, the whole daily living routine.

Up at five, shower, hair, make-up, get my husband going, the kids ready for school, make breakfast, pack lunches, cajole the family into helping clean up the dishes—it was a race just to get each day started. And in between all the frantic activity lurked the nagging question: Who am I and what’s the purpose of my life?

Doing, doing, doing. It seems that Everywoman like everyone else I know is in a constant rush to do more and more. Is it because we are taught that to be something we have to do something? Or is it that we find no purpose in our lives except through what we do? Everywoman thought that her purpose lay in what she did as a mother, an employee, a wife and a friend but all of this doing left her asking herself, “Why? Why do I rush around like this everyday, always feeling harried and late and unsatisfied? Is this the purpose of my life?”

As human beings we are driven to find purpose in life. Purpose defines us. It helps us express ourselves and leave our mark. Having a purpose helps us to understand why we are here. But when we think that our purpose is to do rather than be, our life can become overwhelming.

To uncover your purpose, become conscious of what you are doing and why you are doing it. Discover who you are and work at being the best you, you can be. Your purpose is not found in what you do but in who you be.
