Vampire (My Big Mistake)

Vampire (My Biggest Mistake)

Have you ever done something just to fit in? Just to be cool? To be in the "in crowd" that you want? Maybe you have, maybe you haven't. Why do we do it? I was dumb enough to do something cool by trying to be goth to fit in with a crowd, to feel approved. I wanted to feel like I was a part of a group, part of something cool.

Up until December of 2003, I never liked black that much. Clothes or anything. But at the end of December, my best friend who I haven't seen in six months came to my house with a friend of hers, and she was goth. So we all walked over to Dairy Queen and had some food to eat, and her friend and I started talking and we both connected in a weird way, like we were meeting ourselves instead of someone else. I really started noticing her clothes when we were walking back to my house and I thought they were kinda cool. But that’s all I thought about them.

The next time I saw her, she came with one of my other friends, and that’s when we really started connecting. And that’s also when I started noticing her clothes more and thought how cool they were next to my blue jeans and a t-shirt. I mean, she had the whole thing going. The hair, punk t-shirt, big black baggy pants with chains, and wristbands. The more and more I liked her, the more and more I wanted to dress and be just like her. Then I found out she will be going to my school. I was so happy because then everyone else can meet her and we can date and see each other daily.

The day school started back up, there she was, all black listening to punk music on her Walkman. And there was me, wearing a black shirt, black pants, and skater shoes. The trend continued to grow while we dated until my closet was full of black clothes and all I would listen to is goth metal and punk rock. Whereas before, I would wear Aeropostale and listen to rock, pop, hip hop, country, etc....... Then I stared hanging out with a much different crowd, one that would accept me because I was just like them. For once in years, I was accepted by people. But it came out to be the wrong acceptance.

After the whole conversion, my life went down hill and I felt horrible. I felt so depressed, so down, so crazy. I would get in these moods that even Hitler couldn't top. I would throw stuff, cuss people, and do all sorts of things to fight back. But looking back at it, it had to be one of the stupidest things I've ever done. Ever.

After that experience, I had a wake-up call from my brain, I'm not a goth, I’m not a punk, I'm me, I can be who I want to be as long as I'm happy with my decision, and deep down inside I'm happy with the choice, and that’s all that matters.
