A Matter of Thought
Author: Julie Fuimano, Success Coach

It has been echoed through the ages that what we think about is what we bring about and our thoughts actually create our reality. James Allen’s book, “As A Man Thinketh” was written in the late 19th century to communicate this concept at great length. Steven Covey calls it the “first creation”, meaning that we first create things in our mind and then we create them in reality. If that’s the case, then what are you doing to protect yourself from your own thoughts? If what you think about impacts how you live your life, are you using your thoughts to consciously drive your success or are you at their mercy?

Beware Your Thoughts
You bring about the very thing you think about. If you think things are negative, negative things occur. These negative occurrences then reinforce your thoughts. What you don’t realize is this is a self-fulfilling prophecy. As you think negative thoughts, you actually create a state where you are emitting frequency waves at a low level. You then attract energy waves at that same level. You become a human magnet. Ever notice when you are really stressed out that another bad thing occurs? Perhaps you get sick or your car breaks down. It seems like one thing after another. Then, you might say, “Well, it has to get better”. And as soon as you start thinking it will be better, it does get better. You are projecting your thoughts to bring you that which you receive.

On the Flip Side
The good thing is that the same is true with positive thoughts. When you think positively, you emit energy waves at a high frequency, thereby attracting things that emit this same positive energy. This is very powerful. What this means is that you have the power to control what you receive in life. You can control your life experience by controlling your thoughts!

You’re probably thinking that this isn’t possible. There may be times in your life where things happen that are totally out of your control – you didn’t “think” them to you. And yet, how you experience the event means everything. Events that may seem to be negative have a gift tucked inside. You learn and grow and become stronger. So although the event may seem negative at first, the fact is that the event brought about changes in you that were necessary for your personal growth. The impact the event has on you transforms you, if you let it, by how you think about it!

Understanding “Thinking”
Thinking is an active process. Thinking, as defined in Webster’s Dictionary, means to conceive, to reflect, to believe, “to exercise the mental faculties so as to form ideas and arrive at conclusions.” Thinking requires action.

While you are awake, your conscious mind is at work. The conscious mind is only able to hold one thought at a time whereas your subconscious mind houses thousands of thoughts. Your subconscious mind goes to work as you sleep putting together all of the things you think and learn; it’s busy synthesizing all of the data and information that you absorb during the day. This is why you can wake up in the middle of the night and have a brilliant revelation for something you have been working on and see it in full detail. (Write it down because you will forget it by morning!)

In the conscious mind, we focus all of our attention to accomplish things. Since your conscious mind can hold only one thought at a time, it is important that you make it a constructive one. You have the ability to control your thoughts and what you tell yourself. This means, your subconscious goes to work to make any incongruence congruent. If there is a difference in what you think in the conscious mind and the reality, your subconscious mind goes to work to identify ways to bring about the changes necessary to make this new standard reality. So if you tell yourself negative stuff, you will learn to believe it and it will come to be. If you tell yourself positive stuff, you will learn to believe it and it will come to be. Think you are something, think you can do something, and you can. Think you can or think you can’t, either way you are right.

Choose Your Thoughts Wisely
As you go through your day, listen to your thoughts, what do you tell yourself? Are you thinking how lousy life is, how bad you feel, how you hate your job? Are you listening to others complain and gossip? Be careful what you feed your conscious mind. Is that what you want? If your thoughts or conversations are not what you want to bring into your life, change them! Every time you think something negative, change it to something positive and repeat it several times. Reclaim your power by training yourself to catch negativity – from yourself and others. Consciously choose your thoughts to produce positive results in your life – the things you really want. Use your thoughts to create the life you want by reinforcing positive statements. Change the inside and the outside will follow. You are what you think about all day long. Choose your thoughts wisely.
