Are you preparing to embark on a new project? Do you have a significant role to play as your company changes due to reorganization, mergers or acquisitions? Are you in business for yourself? Are you in college dealing with finals, difficult teachers and peers who are pulling you in all directions?

Everyone finds themselves confronted with projects and plans that require long term persistence. If you don’t have techniques and strategies to maintain your persistence you may give up. Giving up is the easy way out. It is the guaranteed way not to reap the rewards you have worked for and deserve.

Forging ahead and keeping focused on your goals and dreams are critical to the success of any person, organization or corporation. Too often people give up on a project, because they find themselves encountering difficulties as well as naysayers (people ready to put the project down). In business, it is the role of the leader to keep the team together when the negativity and resistance to persistence begins. In your life, it is up to you to be the leader. It is up to you to keep yourself together and focus on the project and goals ahead.

This issue will give you some techniques and suggestions on how to stay focused and persistent. Remember, whether you are a leader of a team, or you have decided to be a leader in your life, you need to know how to be persistent.

Try-its:

If your team wants to give up take immediate action:

1. Review with the team what you have achieved.
2. Remind them of the trials and tribulations that you have experienced as a team.
3. Take them out to do a challenging task that they have never done before (go ice skating, build a house for Habitat for Humanity). This reinforces the team’s ability to meet challenges.
4. Have them break into pairs and come up with a motivational slogan to deal with the current situation. Have the group pick the one that makes them feel most motivated. Make it into a poster to share with every member.
5. Laugh together.

Kick-butt actions:

Enough of the whining about how hard your life is and how everyone doesn’t understand. The truth is anyone who is a winner understands. When I asked my friend Bob about his success and whether or not it was easy, he replied, “yeah I’m an 20 year overnight success!”

The truth of the matter is this - if it were easy everyone would be doing it. Think about that.

1. If running your own business were easy – why aren’t there more people doing it?
2. If being a manager were easy – why aren’t there more people doing it?
3. If being married were easy – why are divorce rates over 50 percent?
4. If finishing college and going to the next level were easy – why aren’t there more people doing it?
5. If putting 15% of you savings away were easy – why aren’t there more people doing it?

If you really want to live a life of dreams, you need to know up front that it is not easy. There are things that you can do to help you stay persistent, they are:

1. Continually take action. It may be a small action step but if you do it daily you will accomplish enormous tasks.

2. Talk to yourself in positive, affirming ways. If you hear yourself saying things like “What’s the point?” “I can’t do this” “I’ll never get it” you must IMMEDIATELY say the opposite to yourself. This must become a habit. The bottom line is if you don’t believe in yourself, who will?

3. Have a buddy that you can call up and tell that you will keep going on no matter what. Make sure that this person doesn’t tolerate your whining but does encourage you to keep on keeping on.

4. Review you plans, projects and dreams. Keep them in front of you.

5. Do not give up!
