ADHD - "Tracks of my tears"

Statement: My intent in this newsletter is to express as quickly as possible my own beliefs and opinions on matters. I have no problems with people who disagree with my opinion and have even been swayed to rethink my position from time to time. Many of us with ADHD have a tendency to be "good actors". By this I mean that in public or around friends we can be outgoing and engaging, but when we are alone we have a tendency to be depressed and suffer with "self defeating" thoughts. In Dr. Halloway and Rateys book "Driven to Distraction" there are a list of questions one of which is really applicable to me and others like me. The question is "Are you the life of the party one day and hang dog the next?" I related so well to that experience and continue to struggle with it from time to time to this day. In talking with others with ADHD over the years I have found this to be a very common element. Most of them tell me their closest friends and many family members have no idea they have these bad days as they don't like showing this side of their lives. Over the years (especially my years in law enforcement) I have heard many stories of people committing suicide and whose families were totally stunned, shocked and surprised that this could happen. To them this person seemed happy and outgoing. It is my personal belief that many of these persons had undiagnosed or untreated ADHD although I have no proof to back this up.

Many of these characteristics go back to our youth when we struggled with school, friendships, social settings or other life problems. We adapted these "acting" roles to compensate for how we were really feeling. No one when they ask you how you are doing really wants to here a list of your problems. Neither do I when I ask.

There is a song I believe Smokey Robinson made famous called "tracks of my tears". Although the lyrics speak to what appears to be a romantic relationship I think the they can also apply to other relationships with friends, family, parents, siblings and other life problems. They can reflect our moods on missed chances and opportunities in life that may have been related to ADHD. I thought I would remind you of the lyrics.for reflection. I would also be interested in any comments pro or con you might have in relationship to this issue to see if I am alone or all wet about it. E-mail me back or reply if you have time.

TRACKS OF MY TEARS

People say I'm the life of the party

Cos' I tell a joke or two

Although I might be laughing loud and hearty

Deep inside I'm blue.

So take a good look at my face

You'll see my smile looks out of place

If you look closer its easy to trace

The tracks of my tears

Since you left me

If you seen me with another girl

Seeming like I'm having fun

Although she may be cute

She's just a substitute because

you're my permanent one

So take a good look at my face

You'll see my smile looks out of place

If you look closer its easy to trace

the tracks of my tears

People say I'm the life of the party

Cos" I tell a joke or two

Although I might be laughing loud and hearty

Deep inside I'm blue

Outside I'm masquerading

Inside, my hope is fading

Just a clown, since you put me down

My smile is make-up

I wear since my break up with you

So baby, baby take a good look at my face

You'll see my smile looks out of place

If you closer its easy to trace

The tracks of my tears..........

Thanks and talk to you next month.
