Color Me Colorful

As you are reading these words, you are taking part in one of the wonders of the natural world. For you and I belong to a species with a remarkable ability. That ability is language. Man's most important cultural invention. With nothing but words, we can reliably cause new ideas to arise in each other's minds. We can control opinion with exquisite precision.

Even in our social and business relations, the race is not to the swift, but to the verbal - the spellbinding orator - the silver-tongued seducer.

Language is organized a bit like the Crayloa package of colors. Some boxes of Crayloas have more color choices than others. With more choices the artist can paint more vivid and interesting pictures.

And so it is with your vocabulary. If your language has only two color words, you write word pictures mostly in black and white. A larger package, or inventory of descriptive and colorful words will paint far more lively and colorful word pictures for others to see and feel.

While the less fortunate hapless worker's limited conception of reality is molded by his limited linguistic categories. And by his limited use of the language. His best efforts to raise himself above the worker class collapses when his language skills fail to support his ambitions.

Perhaps he has lofty dreams, but those dreams are trapped inside head. No dream or ambition can be shared without being couched in words. Limited words means limited expression. He is trapped by his limited use of the language.

BUT LETS TALK ABOUT YOU

Yes, everyone loves an interesting conversationalist, and that means knowing what to say and how to say it. No fumbling to find the right words to express your ideas.

Consider how many great opportunities are lost by what I call "semantic sabotage". We have all had the experience of uttering a sentence, then stopping and realizing that it wasn't exactly what we meant to say. The seeds of disaster are more often laid in the wrong words than wrong actions. In the struggle to succeed we must remember that "preparation always precedes opportunity."

Effortless conversation and colorful dialog skills must be yours BEFORE that perfect opportunity confronts you and you find yourself stumbling over your words. Not knowing what to say and how to say it is often defined as "the dialog dilemma. More of the good life is lost to the dialog dilemma than the lack of education or brains.

You may feel you are stuck with your current IQ while that may be partially true, you are not stuck with your current vocabulary or verbal skills.
