Description: Say “Yes” to Yourself

To gain balance of tangible aspects appears like a simple task. You can balance fruits on the scales in the grocery store (kids love to do this). You can balance your checkbook (or hire someone else to do it). And you can eat three balanced meals per day (uh, at least you know you should). But, sometimes it’s harder to balance those intangible aspects of our lives. To achieve balance between your job and your home life requires a little guidance and lot of effort.

“Balancing Work and Family” begins guiding the reader by asking, “What’s Balance To You?” This chapter provides examples of people who led very organized lives, but they were not spending quantity time on personal aspirations. Drafting a personal balance statement helps to frame your life goals, directions and specific steps, with flexibility for obstacles. In the next chapter, “Breaking Through Your Blocks”, you learn how brainstorming or freewheeling empowers solutions that once appeared silly, but realistically could be implemented.

The next seven chapters compliment the first two, with information about setting your own agenda, wise communication, and time as an ally. It’s easy to drown in negativity and to blame others for our imbalance. “However, when we choose to embark on a positive path – that we’re strong, able, confident, determined, up to a challenge – we then direct all our efforts to bringing this option to reality.”(pg. 71)

Ken Lizotte and Barbara A. Litwak know we sometimes forget about ourselves when we try to balance a career and a family. The open-ended questions, in the balance check section at the end of each chapter, encourage us to look within to see if we are truly comfortable with the weights on our scales. I recommend reading and re-reading “Balancing Work and Family” throughout all of the stages in your adult life. “You’ll actually be working harder, or at least smarter, by keeping yourself sharp and performing at optimal mental and physical levels.” (pg. 87)
