Fund raising is the effort to raise money for a cause or project. No matter how worthy a cause might be the least appealing part of volunteering or supporting any type of charity or organization is fund raising. It isn’t the selling of a product or the spending personal time raising money, it is the simple task of asking people for their hard earned money in order to support something that may not be as important to them as it is to another. Fund raising doesn’t have to be that way and it is very possible to have a successful fund raising experience with few unpleasant incidents while raising a good deal of money for a worthy cause at the same time.

While selling items or trinkets provide people with an incentive to give money to a certain organization, there is nothing wrong with simply asking for a gift. Asking for money is a difficult thing no matter what the motivation might be, so it is always a good idea to look professional and act professional. Always remain polite even if an individual refuses to give a gift or is simply rude. It is always best to leave a good impression behind because people may just be having a difficult day or don’t have the money to give at that point. A positive memory of a particular organization may result in a gift during future fund raising efforts.

Never sugar coat what a particular organization is fund raising for and let the passion for a particular cause shine through actions and words. Honesty is always appreciated when fund raising as well as passion. Sometimes the feeling behind a person’s words is transferred to another person and provides the motivation that he or she needs to become a donor. Remember that there is nothing wrong with asking friends and family for a gift when fund raising because it is not a personal gift, it is a contribution to a worthwhile cause.

A person involved in fund raising may believe in the idea behind their cause but may not be as educated as they should be on what they are asking people for money to support. Nothing puts off a potential donor more than when they ask a fund raising volunteer a question about their organization or charity and find that the person asking for money really isn’t aware of the issues considered important to a potential donor. Some fund raising programs provide volunteers and fundraisers with literature about their cause or even schedule educational seminars or meetings in order to prepare the fundraisers for any questions that might arise.

Some of the questions that might come up when discussing a possible gift with a donor can include inquiries about statistics that support the need for a cause like the one that fund raising is happening for, exactly how much of the money that is donated will be distributed for the cause and who decides how the money will be distributed in order to benefit the fund raising cause. These may seem like simple questions, but donors expect to hear informative summaries that are both sensible and moving. While there is nothing wrong with being passionate about a particular cause, it never hurts to be passionate about the cause’s fund raising efforts as well.
