Simplicity and September 11
Author: © Nita Jackson
In light of what our country is remembering as we her rumors of war, I have a hard time not taking time to acknowledge what happened on September 11.
Many of us just want to return to business as usual.
I wonder if that would be the best thing. If anything in the world has changed a definition in priorities Sept 11 should have.
Theres a saying I've heard about the importance of ones priorities in life and this is it:
“No one will at the time of their impending death will think Oh, if I only I had worked more and spent more time at the office”
I personally am thankful for all those who were late for work that day. Normally I would think being late would be worthy of rebuke but not that day. Dont get me wrong I dont advocate being late. In fact my policy is if youre not 2 minutes early ,youre late!
We learned On Sept 11 that no one is guaranteed a long life. I implore you please dont settle back into business as usual. Take time to make the hard decisions, the big and small changes and final mission statement to make a life you will not be grieved about on the last day.
Now is a good time to refine your personal mission statement. That alone will define every decision and commitment you fill life up with.
I'm a living example of how fast life can change. One minute I was vibrant and healthy
and that same day I became painfully handicapped. All it took was someone driving too fast and failing to yield the right of way, to change my life forever.
Im in pain 24 hours day. Now I'm very picky about what I take on, I have to be.
There was a time when I worked 13 jobs at once. At that time it took the death of my young mother to wake me up about overcomittment and enjoying a simpler life.
So as we take this time of reflection, I leave you with this quote:
“ People need to decide what is most important to them. I call these governing goals,” says Hyrum Smith of Franklin Covey. “Just as our countrys forefathers wrote down what mattered to them-freedom of speech, freedom of religion (*not freedom from religion)
- you need to write your constitution. Then mold your goals from that.”
