Determine Your Tune
Author: Katherine Scott
Most of us spend several hours each day communicating with others through the medium of our voice. Our voices contribute much to how we impact our world.
In the same way that no two snowflakes are the same, everyone has their own unique and wonderful vocal qualities. Our voices tell the world who we think we are. When that is different than who we are, voicework can help align the two. We all have a blueprint for a resonant, confident and balanced voice and we are the architects. Through voicework it’s possible to transform how we feel about ourselves and how others perceive us.
“Transformation occurs when we tune into that which is already a part of us.”
Do you determine "your own tune"?
How do you feel when you think you’re not being heard?
Does your voice help you to be taken seriously?
What’s your reaction when you hear a recording of your voice?
What physical responses do you notice when you’re not expressing your opinions or feelings?
What are the qualities that capture your attention when you hear someone speak?
How do you use silence?
Sometimes our childhood wounds are expressed in our voice. If we were taught as children that it was unacceptable to have opinions or feelings, then having a strong voice as an adult can make us feel unsafe. Voicework is an ongoing process and will likely need to be accompanied by other work that goes beyond the scope of this article. However try the following as a beginning.
1 What’s in a Name?
Say this sentence, using your full name. MY NAME IS………. Change the pitch and volume. Sound is vibration. Where do you feel the vibration? Is it deep or shallow? Make the inflection rise at the end of your name. Now drop it. What impression is given in each case? Experiment. Become aware of your reaction on a physical and emotional level. Go by what you feel, not what you hear.
2 The String
The throat is in the fifth chakra which is associated with self-expression and higher creativity. The diaphragm, which provides the support for the voice, is in the third chakra. Place your right hand gently on your throat and your left hand on your diaphragm. Picture a string that joins your two hands. This string runs through your heart chakra which bridges the lower three chakras (physical world) with the upper three (spiritual world.) Keep in mind there is no wrong way to do this and try sighing, moaning, or repeating a mantra. As you try different things, picture the string vibrating. This may be a physical sensation or a mental picture. The point is awareness.
3 Sing.
Listening to music can be very relaxing and beneficial. But how many of us have the idea that making music is for other people with talent? We all have the ability to create musical sound because we can all sing. (If you just heard an inner voice saying “But I’m tonedeaf,” then this message is especially for you!) Voices work (singing or speaking) when air passing over the vocal folds makes them vibrate. If you can speak, you can sing. Sing in the car. Sing in the shower. Sing with the radio. Sing your favorite affirmations. Sing offkey. Sing while doing the string exercise. Sing your name. Sing… and tune into the vibration.
We are all spiritual, emotional, rational and physical beings and when we change, we change on all those levels. The first step is to become aware so it’s important to listen to your inner voice and move through any resistances gently. Voicework is a powerful tool that enables us to move toward integration, our fullest potential and our highest creative expression.
Stay Tuned.
