Meditative Sexuality
Author: Burl B. Hall

In contrast to the sex as sin attitude, I would maintain that sexuality is a spiritual act as potent as prayer and meditation. Indeed, I would say sexuality is a form of meditation and prayer. The sex act (be this heterosexual or not) is a mother to spiritual renewal. To understand this, meditate on the term we use for sexuality engaged in for its own enjoyment, "Re-creational." See, healthy sex is about rebirth, be that spiritual, physical, or psychological.

Sexuality is a meditative tool. In understanding sexuality, one can understand everything. If a man meditates on his woman, then he can understand God’s ability to conceive, give birth, and absorb creation into Her Body (i.e., the Goddess as Fate who in modern times is hidden in the metaphor of the Fairy Godmother). Furthermore, if a man gazes upon his woman with wide-open eyes, he can also see something of himself for she is his mirror image. In her, he can see his feminine abilities to conceive a thought, or absorb the sounds of birds singing amongst the trees. To put this in another way, what we understand about ourselves and what we understand about God are not two understanding. We are female and male in the image of God!

To reverse this meditation, if a woman meditates on her man, she is being given an understanding of God’s ability to enter into, explore, impregnate, and serve as the impulse (Eros) to create. She is also seeing something of herself for a man’s body serves as an image of a woman’s ability to fertilize and impregnate. To illustrate, consider that the origin of the term “semen?is the Greek “sema,?meaning “food?as well as “seed.? Now, think on this term “sema?in relationship to the metaphor (a language that connects processes) “your words are food for thought.? This metaphor reflects the ability of our words to be seminal (i.e., food or seeds) to the creation of new thoughts. In their teachings, women have the power to fertilize and impregnate just as men have the power to conceive and give birth. Sex is a mirror of cognition. If you understand one, you understand the other. “As above, so below,?the mystics say.

Now, think of the last time you stood in front of a mirror. Is it not true that in the mirror image your left became right and vice versa. To see what I’m talking about, hold a paper with writing up to the mirror. It reverses itself, right? It’s the same thing with our bodies as women and men. The female genitalia folds inward while the male genitalia erupts outward. Women and men are mirrors of one another. The female body is a metaphor for the Inner Reality in which conception occurs. While I am physically a man, the conception of this article is the result of my yin (female) powers. I conceive these words within me and they flow forth from my mouth (and fingers). In writing this article, I am conceiving and giving birth. In this way, I mirror women. My words, in turn, mirror my inner reality. In this way, you are getting some sense of Burl’s inner workings.

In their flowing from my lips (the term “mother,?by the way, is of the same root as “mouth?, these words are being absorbed by you. Like any man, I want to enter many wombs and spread my seed around. Kidding aside, these words have a seminal power in their flowing from my womb (mind) and can potentially serve as the impulse for a creative event within you as the reader. These words are my yang, or masculine power. As the absorber, you are functioning as the yin.

Behind these speculations is a perception of gender as verb instead of noun. Sexuality and gender are processes, not product. Our body as woman or man is a reflection of gender as verb (process). For example, when the Sun’s rays fall upon the flowers in the field, those rays are serving as food or fertilizing impulses to the flowers that grow. This interaction of Earth to Sun is a creative process that is mirrored in our sexuality. The Earth and Sun are making love just as we might make love to our Beloved tonight (or maybe as soon as you finish this article). This idea of mine is nothing new. Lao Tzu, author of the Tao Te Ching, makes the same idea salient when he thunders, “the entire universe makes love.?

In our quest for wholeness, this idea of a universe that makes love is an important point to realize. We are not isolated beings existing as women and men in an alienated universe that is distinct from who we are. We are mirrors of God’s Nature and are in Her (His) image. Now, wouldn’t sex be much more fulfilling if we could see something of God in our actions? A mirror image helps us to see ourselves. Without a mirror image, we would remain unknown. Perhaps it could even be said that God (the uncreated) divided Herself into female and male so She could enjoy exploring Herself via Her mirror image (creation)? Wouldn’t that make the act of lovemaking sacred? What would the consequences of that perception be?
