How to have Powerful, Positive and Potent Communication
Author: Sid Smith

Did you realize that you’re communicating every waking moment of your life? You communicate through your words, actions, gestures, and even your thoughts. You communicate through how you feel and what you think, even if no words are spoken.

Miscommunication happens for one of three key reasons:

==> You feel one thing and say another.
==> What you believe isn’t in alignment with your actions or words.
==> It’s a one-way conversation – one or both of you are focused on “your truth”

To develop potent, powerful and positive communication in your relationships, you want to focus on the following 7 key elements:

1. Become knowledgeable about yourself. Pay attention to what you like or don’t like. Know your intention and the qualities (feelings, sensations) of what you want to achieve before you say a word. Take action to create the resulting feeling you want BEFORE you communicate. When you’re self-aware, your communication is more clear, concise, and intimate.

2. Empathy: wearing the shoes of the other without becoming the other. Empathy is much more than listening. When you’re empathic there is a separation between you and the other person, yet you can touch deeply into the other person. Maintain this separation with an open heart and you will communicate with compassion and without judgment or attachment. You can say what you mean and stay true to yourself.

3. Do what you need to stand on solid ground. As you become more aware, you’ll see where you need stronger boundaries or higher standards. Stop tolerating things or people that drain your energy and focus on the present instead of the past. Develop a community of friends who are in tune with what you want and will nurture you toward that end. When you’re on solid ground, you can communicate without judgment or criticism, without defensiveness and with strength and certainty.

4. Take 100% responsibility for your life. Having complete responsibility for your life is incredibly freeing. You get to decide whether or not you’re happy, successful, or satisfied. No blame, no judgment of good/bad or right/wrong. Things are simply the way they are because of an accumulation of all the choices, thoughts, and actions you’ve made throughout your life.

5. Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want. When you focus WITH others on what you want, positive results will quickly emerge. Focusing on what you don’t want (griping, moaning, complaining) accomplishes little. If you enter a conversation focused on what you don’t want, that’s what you’ll get (just to prove yourself right). However, if you enter that same conversation focused on what you DO want, you’ll attract just that.

6. Be in your body. Your whole being, including your body is a vehicle for communication. Pay attention to how you’re sitting, standing, walking or entering a room. The energy you generate is directly tied to what’s going on with your body, and this energy gets communicated with or without words. Your body is like a tuning fork, causing like-tuned people to vibrate with you. Pay attention to how your body is tuned and you’ll instantly improve your communication.

7. Practice! There is no point in time when you’ve suddenly done “enough” to be crafting potent, powerful, positive language. It starts right now, in your next breath, in your next movement or action. It starts with the words “I will” instead of the words “I can”. It starts with a simple commitment that you WILL make right now. The seed has been planted. Do water it.
