Managing Your Time More Effectively
Author: F.B Rehman

Chapter Six
Managing Your Time More Effectively

It’s painfully obvious that in order to achieve ones goals in life, one has to become a very busy person.

Your family, your job, community work, and studying in your current job in order to be more successful.

Time however is ticking at the very same rate for everyone else. The rich and the poor all go through those 86,400 seconds per day.

Its is entirely up to you how you invest these precious hours, minutes and seconds to achieve better health, wealth and happiness. Achieving these things require you to spend time where it counts.

The following exercise will get you to list the activities and tasks that took up yesterdays 24 hours, then you will assess whether or not you had invested those hours wisely.

Your activities will be analyzed using an A.B.C.D ranking system.

A. Major priority tasks, these are the tasks that are connected to your life goals. (This may even get you thinking about your life goals if you have not already done so)

B. Daily tasks that a must do, but they are not related to your life goals. We do things daily that must complete in order for us to keep moving towards our life goals. (Example: Working for a living is ranked B, in order to provide for your family which is ranked A) Tasks that support your life goals make you feel good when you do them. The more you do them the higher will be your morale and attitude towards life and others.

C. This the fun time, the time to relax, see a movie, go to a play and enjoy the fruits of your labor, this is where you rejuvenate for the things that you need to do for
A and B.

D. Tasks that add very little to your prosperity, family life or career. This may be time spent avoiding a certain situation or task. These items can show up disguised as C’s but all they do is clutter up ones existence and quickly chews up our valuable time. Have you ever felt busy but accomplished nothing? This is what the D’s do to our precious time.

Think through the details of your schedule yesterday – what you did, who you talked to, what about, etc. For example:

a. lay in for half an hour,
b. ate breakfast,
c. cleaned up kitchen,
d. read magazines,
e. dictation,
f. traveled to work,
g. rang spouse,
h. staff meeting,
i. read the paper,
j. sorted mail,
k. daydreamed,
l. wrote a proposal,
m. shopping, etc.

Be as precise as possible in recalling the specifics of the day and list everything in a Time Log, which is a column on the left of a page.

Then estimate the time you spent on each activity, noting it to the right of each item.

1. Now rate each activity you did yesterday as an A, B, C or D ranking.

2. Consider the following questions:

o Was this a typical day? In what ways was it typical? In what ways was it not typical?

o What time did you put to good use yesterday? What do you think was time wasted?

o What would you like to do differently?

o How could you put more ‘A’ or ‘B’ time into your day?

o How will you start making that happen now?

Every day, no matter how ‘busy’ or tired, make sure you spend at least some time working directly on a life goal. Build in time for you’re a’s – every day!
